STORYLINE

MY REVIEW

Let's just state the obvious- - I KNOW I was expecting a modern day Hollow Man scenario based on the trailers and while it was close, it was not what I thought it was going to be. It was okay, not great and definitely fell flat in some areas, but it was a solid 6. Read below (YES, SPOILERS) to find out why I gave it that rating.

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• The tension in the first two acts was intense. I love when movies give you something to be afraid of and NOT show you what that might be. Your thoughts run way and your imagination seems to run wild. What you CAN'T see is scary.
• The viewer is placed in the shoes of Cecilia (Elisabeth Moss) as she struggles with the aftermath of domestic violence, trust issues and a mental breakdown in the making.
• Dark themes. While abuse is no laughing matter and should to be made light of, this movie did give the abuser some of his own medicine but it takes us a little while to get there.

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• The third act leaves a lot to be desired with some obvious plot holes, camera angle oddities and an almost never-ending movie. What we think is the end is not the end and then that happens again. While it was interesting, there's such a thing as too many endings.
• Why do they not have a Canary or Ring Camera in the house on the first night weird stuff happens. Seriously, Bust Buy or Amazon can get that shit to you in 1 day. I have so many cameras in the house I catch every dumb thing my cat does!
• Better writing please...

On a more personal note..... 

I did a thing on the way home from work last night and got about 6" cut on the length of my hair I'm okay. It grows back pretty quickly! Also, had some work done on my sleeve this week. Clay went in and made some highlights on the sugar skill and the microphone. One of these days, I'll get back up in front of people and sing. I do miss that sometimes! Last but not least, my little house panther Isabella hanging out at the base of Darth Vader in the living room.

Zombieland: Double Tap

MY REVIEW

It's kinda good that it took 10 years to make a follow up to the original Zombieland. It really gave the writers quite a bit of time to play with to craft a good story with our 4 anti-heoroes. I think they could have used the time more wisely. 6 was generous.

It felt to me that the characters hadn't grown at all. Typically, after 10 years, people would have changed. None of our main four have developed any new or compelling personal traits. They are the exact same, so the movie was basically a rehash of the first movie with new monsters.

There were definitely some issues with the movie, but it was a fun ride! Read my likes and dislikes below...

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• This was exactly what you expect. If you expected a lot of the same.. that's what you'll get, whatever that means to you.
• What a soundtrack!  Much like the first Zombieland, the soundtrack is full-on amazing! Metallica, Bob Marley, Bob Dylan and a little Kenny Loggins. 

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• It's a sequel, that is not the problem. They maybe regurgitated the same jokes a bit too much.  If you're a Family Guy watcher, you know those scenes when the joke goes on just about one minute too long.. yeah, it's a little too much of that.
• NO, absolutely NO character evolution in 10 years.

Ready or Not

STORYLINE

We follow young bride Grace (Samara Weaving) as she joins her new husband  Alex's (Mark O'Brien) rich, eccentric family in a time-honored wedding day tradition that turns into a lethal game with everyone fighting for their lives. 

MY REVIEW

I saw the trailer a month or so ago and was not exactly dying to see it, but it sounded interesting. Directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett are really only known for V/H/S and one of the writers, Ryan Murphy, was responsible for one of my long-time faves, Wrong Turn from 2003. The idea was interesting. It reminded me of a gory and somewhat satanic version of the movie Clue at times. We'll get into the reasons below, but this is a fun movie. It was by far, not the greatest or even Oscar-worthy, but it was fun. It had flaws, like REALLY bad acting in most cases, but it was fun and there were some authentic ideas and some great laughable lines. Let's dive in, shall we!

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• The bright star of this movie was Margot Robbie, oh, that wasn't her? For a few minutes, it sure did look a lot like her! No, seriously, Samara Weaving was pretty good. She was in a little Netflix find The Babysitter- also a solid performance. She stole the scene from whoever she was paired with and that was unfortunate for them.
•  Adam Brody has quite possibly the best line of the whole movie when he is talking to Grace (Samara Weaving) about what his family thinks of his brothers new bride.. "Don't take it personally, they're just trying to figure out if you're a gold digging whore. You know, like my wife."
• It's dark. Pretty god-damned dark with the murder and all, but it was genuinely a pretty solid take on the weird shit that people do for fame and fortune.
• Aunt Helene. (Nicky Guadagni) Oh, she was awkward and weird but she was glorious!
• This might be a little too much of my weird psychoanalytic  bullshit but here goes and I'm trying not to spoil anything. During the movie we start with Grace in her white wedding dress and all of the others in the movie are wearing dark clothes. This COULD be a symbol of good vs. evil or light vs. dark. But as she plays the game and finds her footing and fights back, her white dress becomes more and more dirty.. and by the end, she's covered in dirt and blood. Fitting? Interesting?
• The song. "Hide and Seek" is the creepiest thing I've ever heard in my life! Nothing else in the soundtrack really stood out.

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• It was hard to have even the slightest bit of empathy for ANY of the characters really. There was little to no development to explain they "why" or make you care if they lived or died. The only one who even began to be a real person was the brother of the groom Adam Brody.
• If you look at the climax of the movie, the last 30 minutes of the movie felt really rushed. The first two acts were like foreplay, peeling back layer after layer in a good balance of exposition and action. Then, in a rush to "get it over with" the story takes a direct path that failed to really satisfy the buildup that I was given. Left me wanting more. I actually had to pause and let myself take in the fact that THAT was really then end. 

On a more personal note..... 

This week was pretty fun. I had a great dinner with a visiting co-worker from Las Vegas and realized that the sun was my best friend when  I wanted to show off the bright red/purple highlights in my hair and I drank some delicious mimosas with friends!

Captain Marvel

With help from S.H.I.E.L.D agent Nick Fury, they set out to unravel the truth.

MY REVIEW

Marvel handed the help of writer/director to Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, whom I have never heard of before now. I'm always nervous when a franchise passes to an unknown, but this was a solid choice in my opinion. Lots of great things and a few that really just JUMPED out as annoyances. It really just left me with a "Meh, I guess it was entertaining enough."

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• FLERKEN!! Let's be honest, I love cats. Specifically, I have three ginger cats at home and the addition of the little ginger avenger, Goose. Such a sweet little guy and  I won't say much more about what a flerken is, but as a cat-mom. ACCURATE!
• That Soundtrack! What an amazing anthology of songs! Salt-N-Pepa "Whatta Man", TLC "Waterfalls" and a little Nirvana and REM to round it out. Sitting in the theater it was so difficult for me NOT to sing along to each one. Such great pairings with this powerful theme.
• Empowering. I disagree with a lot of the other reviews that I have read that say that this was basically a feminist manifesto. I wholeheartedly disagree. We have been conditioned over the years to see superhero as male and the women in the periphery. Captain Marvel is strong, she is invincible, she is human with some edits. The men in her life, like so many in the world are not all assholes, but it feels like there was a lot of the "I know better than you because I'm a man Man-splaining" but it was done to show just how different she is. 

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• Pacing seemed a bit slow for a Marvel Superhero movie. Not that it was stagnant but it felt like the story took way too long to get to the point. Feels like they could have told this story in less than 2 hours and still had the same effect.
• Brie Larson- Don't take this wrong, but did she really want to be in this movie? Some of her scenes felt entirely forced and stiff. I might be completely off the mark and she was written that way to show her Kree emotionally detached training but it did not really play well for me.
• Script/Direction-  I felt like this story was just jammed into the Marvel Universe and could have enjoyed a bit more fluff. To me it seems that the writing did not really tie Captain Marvel to the Marvel Universe in a way that made sense. I feel like her story was disconnected from the others.

On a more personal note..... 

It was a nice afternoon to see a movie. We went and had brunch at Pops Diner and then headed over to Lynnhaven Mall AMC. I did feel it was important to show my Star Wars allegiance so I wore my 40th Anniversary tee that I got year before last at Star Wars Celebration. Picked up a little Jason to live on my Desk!! And last but not least, my one little flerken got a Star Wars backpack. Transparency, my mom got the little backpack for me as a purse for the upcoming Star Wars Celebration, but it just looked so much more adorable on Rocket.

MY REVIEW

I really enjoyed watching this documentary, however, the title is a little misleading. This should have been called the Life of Sam Cooke. There was very little time devoted to the actual untimely death of Sam Cooke. It's full of wonderful history and culturally significant African American culture.

Yes, there were some dubious assertions made about the death of not just Sam Cooke, but several others. Yes, there were some pieces that did not have factual back up to prove the statements. It doesn't matter though, it's been over 50 years so it's unlikely that we will ever know what happened.

I think the section where Sam refused to perform in Alabama with he was told that the audience would be segregated. He stood his ground when most of the other performers took the state anyway. I admire his tenacity.

It's a good watch, but don't expect to understand his death at the end.

Aquaman

MY REVIEW

I need to say this to set the tone of my review. I'm not a huge DC Comic fan, so I was going into this movie with a mediorce expectations. I'm glad I set that expectation for myself. This was not a HORRIBLE movie and Jason Momoa was wonderful eye candy.

If you're going to watch this movie, and you SHOULD in a theater, you will need to set aside your reality and turn on your suspension of belief meters.

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• Jason Momoa was not TOOO Momoa. He has been a little over the top snarky in the DC movies that he's been a recurring character. At least his snark was kept to a minimum for this one. There were a few moments that made me giggle though. But seriously!? Who would complain.. HE'S JASON MOMOA. I don't think he's NOT anyones type!
• Cinematography undersea was amazing!
• Soundtrack- What  smorgasbord of awesome music! And I will be adding a few of these to my general work out playlist. 1- Pitbull- "Ocean to Ocean" with sampling of Toto's "Africa" 2- Skylar Grey- "Everything I Need" 3- Depeche Mode- "It's No Good" 4- Roy Orbison- "She's a Mystery to Me" 5- Signor Ros- "Saeglopur"

What was JUST EHHH about this movie:

• CGI- Well, I have to say that there was JUST so much CGI that it almost took me out of the movie. I understand why it was necessary, but it was SOOO over the top. Especially in the first 20 minutes where Nicole Kidman basically looked like a Nicole Kidman mask stretched taught over a face form. 
• The mood shifts are a little off. The characters go between dead serious and cracking jokes way too easily.

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• I really had a hard time with the suspension of believe bit. I kept having to remind myself that this was supposed to be this way. I mean, I do love a good fantasy movie but the whole idea of Atlantis and living and breathing people under water. The Aqua-Special Forces with their water breathing suits. The laser cannons. SHARKS with armor and saddles? Seriously! This was a difficult one to get behind.
• Predictable as FUCK!! This was such a linear plot that nothing much was a surprise!

On a more personal note..... 

Just being adorable today. Snapchat took a pretty awesome picture of Dexter Morgan and he basically looked like a hipster cat! AND I'm close to finishing my 3-D printed robot cat.

The Babysitter

STORYLINE

The events of one evening take an unexpected turn fo rate worse for a young boy trying to spy on his babysitter.

MY REVIEW

It wasn't the worst movie I've ever seen and it was also not an award winner. If you set appropriate expectations and acknowledge the fact that this is a Netflix created, TV-MA rated, B level star filled comedy/horror romp, you will not be disappointed. 6 because I could not bring myself to go any higher. Think Tucker and Dale but not as good.

So, we have Cole, played by Judah Lewis, is WAY too old for a babysitter, but he is neurotic, scared and constantly being bullied. What do his parents do? Of course, hire a hot high school babysitter, Bee (Samara Weaving). Of course, the story starts with Cole staying up late to see what Bee and her friends drafter he goes to bed and boy does he discover a whopper!! She and her friends have just killed someone and are in the process of doing some sort of satanic ritual. Her friends include cheerleader Allison ( Bella Thorne ) handsome guy Max (Robbie Amell), nerdy and crazy Sonya (Hana Mae Lee) and John the Jock (Andrew Bachelor). Let the crazy ensue!

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• Writing and editing was pretty good. Started out with some really great and creating shots and ideas, but... (see What I did not like)
• Pacing is really well done. Not a lot of down time to get bored and plenty of two-punch combinations of comedy and horror.
• It's raunchy enough to be funny.
• Cinematography was well done. I loved some of the shots and they really did a good job of alluding to some of the off screen stuff!

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• Continued from above-- but.... It really began to fall apart when the typical cliches breathe their fiery breath into every bit! Predictable as F&%K!
• I KNOW!! It's a Netflix TV-MA rated HORROR movie. WHY did I think I would get the level of horror and gore that I really want? I don't know either. I must get my brain to comprehend this. This was lacking in a major way for me. They did a decent job with the death scenes but it should have been so, so, SO much more!
• No where near enough to scare anyone. The jump scares were more like yawn scares!
• Words flashing across the screen were ridiculous!

On a more personal note..... 

The kids were enjoying a little catnip on the floor in the afternoon. Oliver does love the nip! Late that night, we had our own little Thanksgiving for the kids! Left to right: Isabella, Jinx,Oliver, Dexter and Rocket.

STORYLINE

A young man's recently deceased girlfriend mysteriously returns from the dead, but he slowly realizes she is not the way he remembered her.

MY REVIEW

I wasn't hopeful after I realized that the plot was achingly similar to Burying the Ex. But I gave it a shot and I was pleasantly surprised. There was just enough humor to keep me interested and the story was actually pretty unique.

So, it is a little overreaching at a few different genres but overall it kinda worked, hence the 6 and not a 2! The humor alone was enough to keep me interested.  The best way I can describe this movie is a Zombie filled romantic comedy!

SPOILERS START HERE!!!
The premise is pretty generic. The dead begin coming back to life but have no idea that they are dead and go about their lives like nothing happened, at first. After a few days, they begin to get aggressive, decompose and well, eat people. Beth (Aubrey Plaza) had apparently went hiking and was bitten by a snake and died. Her distraught boyfriend Zach (Dane DeHaan) and parents (Molly Shannon and John C. Reilly) begin an odd friendship that ends abruptly for Zach. Determined to find out what has happened, he eventually finds out that Beth has returned from the dead along with a few other local folks.

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• My favorite part was new the end when Beths mom, Geenie (Molly Shannon) has Beth (Aubrey Plaza) chained to the stove and Zach (Dane DeHaan) asks where Beth's dad Maury (John C. Reilly) is and her response is "Well, Beth kind of ate his face."
• Aubrey Plaza dumps her typical snarkishness for this witty overdramatic character of Beth.
• Molly Shannon and John C. Reilly PURE GOLD! They were amazing!

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• Paul Reiser and Cheryl Hines are wasted. Not enough really for them. But in reality, it think the ensemble cast was just too big.
• Plot and story were predictable, funny, but predictable.
• And then Anna Kendrick shows up for pretty much no reason.....
• The end is really ridiculous. Just ends with the lights coming on and the news saying that the "thing" is over? What the literal hell was that?

Avengers: Infinity War

STORYLINE

MY REVIEW

I didn't hate it. I also didn't love it. I am not a big Marvel fan, except for IronMan and Captain America. The best way that I can describe this movie is chaotic. Its an overwhelming blend of many plots and stories that are all jammed up into one. It has elements that bind, but it's just soooo much to take in. I had a hard time with the plot the most.

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• It was a fun movie. I liked the fight scenes.
• IronMan and Cap. :) Big hearts there!

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• Plot- Seriously? What the literal hell? This was the most strung out plot that was paper thin to relate the unhinged stories together.. Should really have been more than one movie.
• Thanos- Yes, he's a pretty bad dude, but his backstory and plan almost make him relatable for me. I mean, I kind of identify with him the most in the movie. Maybe I am a bad guy. I can get with that! The writers failed to consistently take the plot that was provided and extend to the movie. I mean at one point in Guardians of the Galaxy, they defined the strength of the Infinity Stones and in this one  when Thanos has 4 of the 5 he can be held down by IronMan and a few others? Seems unlikely.
• More Bad Guys- So there are like a lot of new bad guys that are on screen (Black Order, random boneless guy, Blue chick with horns, Rock dude with a goatee and a pointy-axe wielding guy who we are never really appropriately introduced to.  Like I said, I am not a huge Marvel fan so as a non comic reader, i have no idea who these people are!~

On a more personal note..... 

I added a new piece to the collection. I did a piece in chalk pastels and I have to say, I think it turned out pretty stellar! I just might hang this one up in the house! Took a selfie with curly hair! Rocket really wanted to try a banana.

Justice League

STORYLINE

Despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes, Batman, WW, AquaMan, Cyborg and The Flash may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

MY REVIEW

First, I'd like to say that this MAY have gotten a lower rating simply for the fact that I was sitting in a theater (Lynnhaven Mall) with the dregs of society, i.e.: tiny humans and their handlers as well as medium humans with little respect for cinema rules such as turn off your cell phone and stop the jibber jabber!

I do give Zack Snyder some credit for a decent movie. I loved some of his previous movies such as Suicide Squad, 300 and Watchmen.

It was definitely not a BAD movie. There were a few things that I really enjoyed however, there were not enough to get the rating for me past a six. Let's discuss.

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• Jason Momoa- Dear Mr. Momoa- Can you please just leave your shirt off forever? K-Thanks!
• The comedic interjection from The Flash. I can see the Joss Wheedon humor in this. Love me some Joss!

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• Length!- This movie was really just too long. Between the 22 minutes of previews and the 2 hour movie. I was twisting and turning in my seat. Seriously, next time, I need to go to Strawbridge, where I can at least sit in a recliner!
• The League Itself- Not saying too much here, but Batman just got everyone together and they are all good to go? I mean is there some sort of Superhero Monthly Mixer so no one is really a stranger? I didn't think the movie gave me enough to feel the group is a team other than a mishmash of meta-heroes working together. They were stiff and plainly one-dimensional. Didn't really see much to talk about.
• Theme and Cohesion of Story- This is a patchwork of stories and themes that are all muted together into a movie that is FAR TOO long!
• The Villain- What a downer! I just felt like there was nothing there. His plot line was so weak

On a more personal note..... Had a lovely brunch this morning with my friend Melissa and then off to finish grocery shopping and finally to the movies! Bonus- Here's the K2SO head that we printed on the 3-D printer last week!

STORYLINE

MY REVIEW

It's difficult to pinpoint why I just didn't feel this movie. It could possibly be that it was PG-13 and I typically HATE sitting in theaters with kids. This was part of the problem here too.

{Side Note- Dear Parents- If your kid cannot sit and enjoy the whole movie without you having to tell them to sit still and watch, kick my seat repeatedly or a hundred and fourteen other things that drive people crazy, DON'T BRING THEM!!}


This is a very by the book script. Nothing too big on the surprises or even the creativity. It just fell a little far from the mark for me. It was by no means a bad movie. It was entertaining and I liked it, but I didn't love it.

I think of it like this.. back in the day when a cassette tape came out there was an A side and a B side. Everyone loved the A side. It had all of the best songs. All of the best lyrics. Every song was a sing-a-long classic. Then there were the B sides. They were typically not your first choice, but they were from your favorite band, so you tried. You listen a few times and wait. Listen a few more and wait a little longer. But they just weren't as good as the A side. That's how I feel about this movie. It's the B side of the original. I wanted to like it more than I did. I gave it a good and decent shot. It was just a B side movie.

What I DID LIKE about this movie:

• The Music! There was not one song that I was not tapping my foot along with. 
• Baby Groot! When last we saw Groot, he was in a flower pot dancing along to the music. He's the star of this movie of me. Beginning scenes showcase all that I love about Groot.

What I DID NOT LIKE about this movie:

• Plot- A little heavy handed on the "Family is important" kick for me. Leaving ghee whole subplot when a family member betrays one of the characters a little outside of the ballpark. The plot was just below average.

On a more personal note..... Had some sweet kitty time today with three of the 4 bears. Dexter, Rocket and Isabella were super friendly. Jinx not pictured as he was more concerned with trying to escape into the backyard.
